Achilles 3 - 0 Debenham LC (Suffolk Senior Cup QF) 7/12/13

Achilles, current leaders in the Suffolk and Ipswich League Senior division, rose to the challenge to defeat opponents lying sixth in the Thurlow Nunn First division. The Ipswich side started at a high tempo and could have taken an early lead when Andy Coote intercepted a back pass. Achilles took the lead after 20 minutes Coote heading home from Robbie Smyth's far post cross. Debenham really should have equalised when Ben Green wriggled through but he scuffed his shot badly wide. Achilles started the second half strongly and Sam Chilvers did well to tip over a Leys free kick and from the resulting corner the ball was cleared off the line as the Achilles forwards piled in. Debenham enjoyed periods of possession but lacked a final touch although on the hour Adam Sturman was forced to head off the goal line to maintain the single goal advantage.

That advantage was doubled in the 65th minute. Liam Hillyard picked up the ball in the centre circle and set off on the powerful run towards goal that ended with an equally powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area giving Chilvers no chance. Hillyard added a third ten minutes later to put the game beyond the Thurlow Nunn side. Debenham were finding it difficult to penetrate the resolute Achilles defence and when Ed Cussons looked to have found the top corner from a direct free kick Jason Bones pulled off an excellent diving save.
