Grundisburgh 4- 1 Achilles 4/1/14

Report by John Campany

An inspired Grundisburgh won this table topping clash against leaders Achilles to open up the title race in front of 168 spectators. They made the perfect start in the 3rd minute when Dean Tournay - Godfrey sent a low free kick round the wall and inside the post. It was a feisty affair played at high tempo that saw Grundisburgh extend their lead on 20 minutes when keeper Jason Bones impeded Lyndon Alexander in the box and Tournay - Godfrey netted the spot kick. Achilles went close on the half hour when Liam Hillyard released Andy Coote whose powered shot narrowly missed and Coote then headed Robert Smith's free kick straight at Adam Wilson. Grundisburgh then survived a strong penalty appeal and Smith dispatched a fierce volley that shaved the bar but Achilles pulled a goal back on 43 minutes when Joe Revell played in Andy Coote who firmly drove home.

After the break the home defence excelled as the visitors looked for an equaliser but it was Grundisburgh who consolidated with a third in the 56th minute when the ball was partially cleared and Mical Moore took advantage with tremendous shot from 28 yards that flew past Bones. Achilles showed a positive response following the introduction of Dom Arnold but there opponents were thoroughly resilient and made sure when substitute Mo Fike headed home on 85 minutes to reduce Achilles points advantage to a meagre two points.
