Club Notes 9 September 2014

Still seeking their first win of the new campaign, for the fourth game Achilles' Seniors welcomed their Ipswich-based neighbours, Westerfield United, to Salmet Close last Saturday. The encounter was sponsored by Achilles' president, David Routh, and a fine open game ensued before a large crowd and on a fine surface well prepared by Pauls' voluntary groundsman, Darryle Flegg. In no time at all Achilles were two goals to the good - similar close efforts registered by Ben Deacon and Andy Coote. The latter could well have added another but his effort skimmed the Westerfield bar on its way over the top. The previous week's game at Ipswich Valley Rangers saw Achilles forfeit a two goal advantage and within a few minutes of the second period the same thing happened against a now buoyant Westerfield. However, gradually Achilles came back and a fine move involving Ben and Tom Deller ended with the latter's fine cross expertly converted by Keiron Donovan's header to claim all three points at last. Overall this was a good performance by a better balanced Achilles' side with captain, Chris Leys, taking the "man of the match" accolade.

Meanwhile, after the high-scoring 6-4 victory over St John's Inter As during the week, Jamie King's depleted squad (late holidays, etc) were at Greshams against Inter A champs, Crane Sports. The depletions were such a pity with Jamie intent on securing a victory. However, it was the homesters who took all three points with the only goal of the match.

This Saturday the Seniors visit Wenhaston while their Inter As will be here at Salmet Close.
