Club Notes 13 October 2014

Just one game for Achilles last Saturday - a 1st round Suffolk FA Senior Cup home encounter with Leiston St Margaret's. Sadly the Inter As' game was off due to the withdrawal of Melton St Audry's Inter As from the League. A sad time at present for Melton with their Seniors trounced 9-0 and all of us at Achilles do hope that those that matter at the Club can pull matters together as soon as possible. The only positive thing for us to emerge from the withdrawal is that with Melton's record expunged from the Inter A table, our own position in that table is improved with other challengers losing the advantage of points gained already this season against the villagers.

With manager Lee Osborn away, Shaun Deller and Jamie King took over the managerial reins. Our Seniors had already met Leiston at home in the first game of the season when, despite Achilles enjoying the lion's share of the match, a 1-1 draw emerged when our visitors equalised our solitary goal right on time. Since then Leiston have only added one more point to that tally and rest sadly at the bottom of the table. On the other hand, after a poor start, Achilles have gone from strength to strength and are up there challenging with three or four other Clubs for top spot.

Despite all this many of us thought that Leiston fielded a stronger side on Saturday. However, our good form continued and the lads were two to the good in no time at all - first a deft header from Andy Coote and, then, an audacious 50 yard lob from Dom Arnold. A penalty was then conceded but brilliantly saved by Doug Mustoe, effectively sealing up any possibility of our visitors blocking our progress to round two. Andy Coote then showed how a penalty should be taken and, well into the second half, Danny Allen made it four for Achilles - the final result!
