Club Notes 5 November 2014

After the home defeat against high-flying Crane Sports, there was a certain amount of both concern and determination in Achilles' camp for another tough home fixture last Saturday, this time against equally high-flying Felixstowe Harpers Utd.

The half-term school holiday meant that captain, Chris Leys, was missing from the line-up and, off the park, chairman Dave Morgan was, amongst other things, watching youth football in Manchester, resulting in the excellent back-up crew of secretary, Sue Cook, treasurer, Malc' Saunders, longest serving Achillian, Paul Sparke, ably assisted by ace voluntary groundsman, Darryle Flegg, and pub card "flogger" Simon Revell, pulling out all the stops in response.

This approach and dedication was more than matched on the park and, despite our talented visitors going ahead fairly early on and holding that lead for much of an intense encounter, late goals from Ben Deacon and man of the match, Dom Arnold (the latter's an absolute peach of a free kick), saw Achilles' home 2-1 before a crowd of some 150 or more.

Not quite the same happy outcome for the Inter As with their visit to Ipswich Valley Rangers Inter As resulting in a 4-2 reverse and rather a blow to Jamie King's championship hopes. Achilles' marksmen were Adam Sturman and Carl McCarthy. Another concern, shared with all continuing participants in the Inter A competition, is the withdrawal of two or three Clubs from the league.

Recent 100 Club winners are No. 47 Dave Southgate and No. 25 Linda Norton.

Finally, and so sadly, news of the passing of Peter Cocker an active member of the Pauls Sports & Social Club and, of course, a most valuable officer of both the Suffolk Football Association and the Suffolk & Ipswich Football League (SIL). Rest in Peace, Peter!
