Club notes Mar 4 2013

Another good week-end for Achilles with the Seniors continuing their excellent run with a hard-earned 1-0 success over in-form Coplestonians and the Inter As gaining an equally hard-earned point from a 1-1 draw at highly placed Old Newton Inter As. In the Senior game, although Cops' had a fair share of the mid-field play, their efforts on goal were few contrasted with Achilles who really should have registered more than the single goal notched very early on by in-form striker, Ben Taylor. It was nice to see Andy Coote back in (almost) full match action and a few more games will certainly see him 100% match fit. Overall, and as seen in the recent run of successes, this was another "team" performance with the whole squad playing for one another. Nice, too, to see match-day sponsor, Rosemary Shorten, widow of John, at the game - many thanks, Rosemary, for your continued interest and support. Meanwhile, the Inter As had gone ahead through a fine effort by Louis Collins and it was only in a perplexing nine added minutes before half-time that the homesters equalised. The second half was a little bit "backs to the wall" at times but Shaun Deller's lads held out for that vital point.

This coming Saturday the Seniors are once again at home when East Bergholt will be welcomed to Salmet Close in a game to be sponsored by former Achillian, Doug Pipe, who will undoubtedly bring to the clubhouse some of his former Achilles/Felixstowe Town colleagues for a "beverage" or two. The Inter As will be at Trimley for the second time in three weeks for the important Gipping Press Cup semi-final against the Red Devils. That earlier match finished 2-2 and so another close game is anticipated with the promise of a prestigious final at Woodbridge Town on the 8 May. St Johns Cof E Church was absolutely packed last Thursday for Steve Page's funeral service and, inevitably, it would have been possible to choose so many outstanding squads from the former players there paying their respects to a fine sportsman and teacher - rest in peace, Steve!
