Club Notes 6 April 2015

A successful week-end for both squads with the Seniors winning away 2-0 on the Ipswich School, Humber Doucy Lane, complex against Westerfield while the Inter As proceeded to the final of the Gipping Press Cup via a high-scoring 6-4 win over a talented and youthful Claydon Inter Bs at their place. On balance the Inter As should take top spot, not least, coming back from their poor performance against Westerfield Inter As the week before with, in the end, the confirmation of a cup-final at the Woodbridge Town ground in early May. Not that the success was without its ups and downs, for our youthful hosts were twice in the lead and, with the score 3-2 to Claydon soon after the half-time break, matters looked bleak. However, a sustained 20 minute spell during which four goals were registered by Achilles saw Claydon's real threat extinguished. Even then the best of the 10 goals flashed into Achilles' net confirming the promising talent in the villagers' squad. Achilles' marksmen were Paddy Irish, "Scoop" McCarthy (2), Louis Collins (another "cracker"), Darren Abbott, and Andy Richards.

Meanwhile the Seniors took sometime to break down the Westerfield rear guard but goals from Chris Leys (or was it Andy Coote?), and substitute Mark Lowe (a "blast from the past!), assisted by a fine goal-keeping display by Jack Foster, saw the objective of runners-up position in the SIL Senior Division maintained.

This coming Saturday the Seniors entertain Claydon at Salmet Close while it will be the Inter As' turn to visit Westerfield. On the social front a reminder of the Presentation Evening (Saturday 9th May - no charge), the Reunion/VPs' Dinner (Friday 22nd May - tickets £25 from Dave Morgan 01473 435867), the AGM (Wednesday 27th May), and the Annual Golf Day at Seckford (Friday 3rd July, entry fee £35 - contact Dave or Alan Middle).
