Club Notes 7th May 2015

AchilIes'' Inter As met Coplestonians' Inter As in the final of the Gipping Press Cup on a bumpy Woodbridge Town's pitch yesterday evening (Wed'). The elements were made even worse by, certainly in the early stages, a gale force wind.

In its various sponsorship forms Achilles have won this competition more than any other SIL club - a fine feat in itself - and the 7th or 8th triumph came to pass in a pulsating game by 3-2 after extra time. Reference to Cops' Tony Robinson's excellent notes on this same website saves me the bother of going into any detail about the match watched as it was by an appreciative crowd. Suffice to say that, in their contrasting ways, both teams were a credit to the SIL and it was easy to feel sympathy with the losers who played some excellent football throughout.

Just one reflection - Achilles' winning goal came in about the 119th minute of the match and was probably the best and most spectacular conversion seen by the spectators at any match, whatever the level. Imagine a high cross from midfield on the right of the Achilles' midfield projected to well out on the left and met by a right-footed cross shot volley from some 25 yards which had just about everybody, friend or foe, marvelling at the sheer technical ability of the scorer - well done Achilles' sub' Darren Hayden-Power ("Irish" for short)
So ends another successful Achilles' season with both teams runners-up and, now, this Cup success.
