Club Notes 7 September 2015

An excellent week-end for the Club with the Seniors winning 3-1 at Bramford and the Inter As 7-1 at home at Salmet Close against a plucky Capel Plough opposition. The Seniors' game appeared likely to present a difficult hurdle with the homesters holding third position in the SIL Senior League table. However, after some difficult first half moments during which Bramford had two efforts disallowed for offside and went ahead, a fine effort by Liam Hilllyard brought the scores level at the break. Increasingly, the second half shaded Achilles' way and two efforts from the returning Josh Little (or should one of them be credited to Lee?) in the end resulted in a comfortable Achilles' win to the delight of managers Luke Hillyard and Jamie King. Nice to record Josh's return after his injuries and, once again, captain Chris Leys was commanding in defence. A welcoming note, too, to Dom Arnold who has signed on again after some doubt arising from his new home location.

Meanwhile, Reece Nunn's and Austin King's Inter As proved far too strong for a largely youthful Capel side which, after a close start, was unable to produce a lasting defence to Achilles' promising aggregation. The goals were shared by two of the stars of the victory, "Scoop" McCarthy (4), including a penalty, and Gav McEwan (3). Nice, also, to welcome Jack Middle (son of top Achilles' man, Alan) to the Club.

This coming Saturday both teams will be playing Grundisburgh with the Seniors at Salmet Close and, with no game at Portman Road, a goodly crowd is expected for this meeting of old rivals.

Away from the park a gentle reminder to those players in the signed-on squads that the Pauls Sports & Social Club's sub/Chantry Sports Centre training sub (£25) in total is due by the end of September (all payments in the first instance to "Achilles Club"). An emphasis that this is the only payment expected from each player for the whole season. Finally, the "eagerly awaited" 100 Club competition will commence next week!
