Club Notes 17 May 2016

Well, that's it for another season, with Achilles enjoying probably one of the best ever with the Seniors finishing runners-up in the SIL Senior Division and the Inter As carrying all before them and finishing "champs" in the SIL Inter A League. in addition, the Seniors took the SIL Bob Coleman Knock-out Cup via a thrilling 4-2 display against Haughley United at the Woodbridge Town ground before a sizeable and appreciative crowd. The first half display, leading to a 4-0 interval lead, was probably the best 45 minute display by the Seniors over the whole season.

Achilles must express their sympathy to Haughley who, a few days later, were in the SFA Senior Cup final at Portman Road against the formidable Waveney FC who, I believe, had already secured passage from the 1st to the Premier Division of the Anglian Combination. Haughley were almost there but were pipped at the post almost on the final whistle.

Back to ourselves, praise to Senior managers, Luke Hillyard and Jamie King, and to Inter A managers, Reece Nunn and Austen King, for their outstanding work over a long and challenging season. With virtually all the managers and players lined up for next season the only potential blot on the horizon is the retirement of ace football secretary, Sue Cook, after umpteen seasons keeping the lid on the "necessaries". Many thanks, Sue, but where is your successor coming from? Anyone interested please contact Dave Morgan (01473 435867) as a matter of urgency.

Finally, all the hard work at Achilles was recognised at the SIL's presentation evening last night at the Goals of Ipswich venue when Achilles were crowned Senior Club of the Season and Liam Hillyard and Carl (Scoop) McCarthy received accolades for their feats as top scorers in, respectively, the Senior and Inter A divisions. Two days before that illustrious occasion, at our own Presentation Evening, Gav' Van Oene, Liam Hillyard, Keiron Donovan (Senior awards) and "Scoop" (Inter As - two awards) were deserved recipients of our coveted Club awards.
