Club Notes 18 September 2016

Achilles' Seniors were at a rejuvenated Sidegate Avenue in Ipswich on Saturday against newly promoted Ransomes Sports. Certainly, now that Ipswich Borough Council have added the site more specifically to their list of Sports Centres, the future looks good for both cricket and football (and, possibly, bowls again it's understood).

Despite enjoying the balance of play and striking both the post and bar, to the chagrin of managers, Luke Hillyard and Andy Coote,  Achilles went behind just before half-time when a quick break down the homesters right wing saw a fine shot nestling in Jack Foster's net to give Ransomes a lead that, perhaps, they were fortunate to enjoy. The early stages of the second half followed a similar pattern and a thunderous shot by the Ransomes' left mid-fielder once again left Foster standing. Matters looked black for Achilles but, suddenly, and despite the departure from the field of play of ace midfielder, David Grimwood, the proceedings suddenly "stood on their head" and in a startling 20 minute period man of the match Lee Grimwood 2, Danny Allen and Gavin Van Oene (pen) produced a 4-2 scoreline which Achilles held reasonably comfortably to the final whistle.

A quick post-mortem of the proceedings would suggest that Achilles took some while to come to terms with a large, albeit, excellently surfaced pitch, and with Keiron Donovan absent on "new baby" duties it took some while before we really took hold of the game in the middle of the “park”.

Meanwhile, back home at Salmet Close, Reece Nunn's Inter As welcomed Mendlesham in a return "A" League encounter having already beaten them 9-0 at their place a few weeks ago. Sadly for our visitors they were no match for Reece's lads who, would you believe, registered another 9-0 win. Marksmen were David King (3), JP Taylor (2), "Carty" McCarthy (2), and Gary Coplen in a performance which was a fine way to welcome Reece's new born daughter into this world.

Finally, a reminder to the members of both squads that the Pauls' Sub/Training payment is now due and should be made no later than the 30th September.
