Club Notes 23 October 2016

A successful week-end for Achilles with the Seniors defeating top of the table rivals, Bramford United, 5-1 and the Inter As triumphing 3-0 at Bury St Edmunds against Sporting 87's Inter As.

The Seniors' win was all the more meritorious with three of the main squad missing and Josh Little returning after a lengthy injury spell. The damage, as far as our attractive visitors were concerned, was administered in the first 45 minutes via four excellent goals notched by captain Keiron Donovan (2), "Scoop" McCarthy, and Liam Hillyard. Bramford did score one, a generous penalty which Shaun Chaplin all but saved, but the margin was just too much for them and another conversion by McCarthy in the second period secured the nap hand.

Little's return was a triumph for him and the Club and he has every chance of slotting back to a permanent position at the back while the real reason for the resounding victory was the return to top form of several of the squad who, perhaps, had been just one degree under, despite several fine wins, in recent weeks.

News is through that in the next round of the Suffolk Senior Cup the Seniors will be travelling to Lowestoft on the 19th November to meet the current Cup holders, Waveney FC, from the Premier Division of the Anglian Combination. A coach is likely to be the mode of transport to the north east of the County and supporters (at £10) are invited to indicate their wish to travel (contact Dave Morgan, 01473 435867, asap).

Meanwhile, the news from the west of the County was just as inspiring where it took some time to break down a resolute Sporting 87 defence but goals from Matt McCarthy, a towering header, and Callum Moran (2) saw three valuable points secured. Other "stars" were Joe Hanley, Shaun Jordan and Adam Sturman.

This coming Saturday Inter A leaders, Westerfield United, will be welcomed to Salmet Close for a knock-out encounter in the SFA Suffolk Senior Reserves Cup with an early 1 30pm kick off.

Finally, latest 100 Club winners have been notified as No: 19 Helen Saunders, and No: 51 John McNally.
