Club Notes 30 October 2016

What a week-end for Achilles with the Seniors winning 7-3 at East Bergholt while the Inter As defeated fellow SIL competitors, Westerfield United 7-2 in the second round of the Suffolk FA Senior Reserves Cup.

The Seniors' SIL Senior match was a "goalfest" for a large crowd played in ideal conditions. However, early play suggested success for the homesters with them twice taking the lead before two for Achilles produced a 3-2 interval lead. The second period belonged almost entirely to us with the eventual scorers being club captain, Keiron Donovan (3), Gavin VO (2); Liam Hillyard, and Courtney David. Not surprisingly Keiron was named man of the match from which the three points consolidated Achilles' lead at the top of the SIL Senior table.

Meanwhile, an earlier start at Salmet Close for the Cup match saw a not dissimilar pattern with, in the first 15 minutes or so, Westerfield looking by far the most likely team and going ahead through a superb left wing effort. However, Achilles fought back and took a 2-1 interval lead which transformed into a commanding 4-1 advantage half-way in the second period. The visitors then made it 4-2 possibly heralding a Westerfield comeback but, surprisingly, they fell away and three more home efforts produced that final 7-2 result and progress to the next round. Marksmen were JP Taylor (3), Matt McCarthy, Adam Sturman (an absolute cracker), Gary Coplen, and Jack Middle.

This coming Saturday the Seniors welcome SILSenior "champs", Crane Sports, to Salmet Close for a real top of the table "six pointer" while the Inter As visit Coplestonians' Inter As.

A reminder that on the 19th November the Seniors travel to Lowestoft to meet the holders, Waveney FC, in the next round of the Suffolk FA Senior Cup. A coach will be departing Salmet Close at 11 am and supporters are welcome (£15 to defray travel costs) to contact Dave Morgan on 01473 435867 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
