Club Notes 26 September 2017

Remarkable happenings at Salmet Close last Saturday where unbeaten Coplestonians were Achilles' visitors for an anticipated tough match on our part against the youthful east-enders (east Ipswich that is!).
With our lads nursing a 100% record, a superbly prepared pitch, and a reasonably sized crowd, it was all set-up for a classic encounter.

Achilles' started well and a poor pass back to a stranded visitor's 'keeper saw Lee Grimwood stroke the ball in for an early goal. Almost immediately our visitors missed a penalty effort, actually, it was a brilliant "stop" by "Chappers" Chaplin betwwen the sticks! Another five minutes or so and then, from our visitors' viewpoint, "all hell was let loose" when brilliant forward play on Achilles' part resulted in no less than six efforts finding their way past our startled visitors' 'keeper within a 20 minute period to give our lads a 7-0 half-time advantage! Our further marksmen in the rampage were Liam Hillyard (3), David Grimwood (2), and Danny Garrod.

Inevitably, the second half was a rather academic affair with Cops' looking much more the promising outfit we had prepared to welcome. However, no more goals emerged for either team with our visitors forfeiting their unbeaten record and Achilles maintaining our 100% start to the season.

Meanwhile the Inter As were over at Copleston School against Cops' seconds and with a very strong, if mature, squad available it was (temporary) manager, Jamie King's anticipation that the squad's 100% record would be maintained. However, in a somewhat volatile atmosphere at times, a 3-3 draw emerged with our hosts finally equalising right on time and with our veteran 'keeper, Dougie Mustoe struggling with a nasty knee injury. On the bright side it was good to see "Scoop" McCarthy back in action and his two goals were accompanied by one from brother Matt to produce the three.

This Saturday the Seniors' make therir way up the Norwich road to promoted AFC Hoxne while the Inter As are idle. The following Saturday the Seniors have a blank date while the Inter As welcome Capel Plough's Inter As in the SFA Senior Reserves Cup. Following that, on the 14th October, the Seniors make a 2nd round SFA Senior Cup trip to Lowestoft to meet, again, Waveney FC, the club we beat 3-0 at the same venue last season in the 3rd round of the same competition. It looks as if we have a full coach for that trip!
Finally, a reminder that the first winners in the annual 100 Club were Peggy King and Michael Sherwood.
