Club Notes 31 October 2017

Mixed "blessings" from Saturday's matches, with the Seniors registering an amazing 11-0 away win against a rather poor Ransomes Sports while the Inter As at home lost out 1-4 to an impressive Old Newton squad.

In the days leading up to the Ransomes match there was concern on the part of Achilles' management with no less than four 'keepers unavailable and three other regulars away, probably on "half term" duties. Add to this the understanding that our hosts were now being managed by one of the best local exponents of the "art". As it was, in the end, regular 'keeper, Shaun Chaplin, reported (half) fit and, goodness, within 20 minutes Achilles were six, yes six, to the good. Sadly, for Ransomes, there was really little improvement on their part with our lads bossing the remaining 70 minutes and consolidating their leadership of the SIL Senior Division. Top performer and marksman was Lee Grimwood (4), with Ivan Buxton and Rob Bucys (both 2), Danny Garrod, David Grimwood, and Keiron Donovan contributing the remaining conversions.

Meanwhile, at Salmet Close, Old Newton's squad started most impressively although, to be fair to our lads, the visitors' 'keeper (allegedly a full back out of position!) made at least three "out of this world" saves and his colleagues were just that bit sharper upfront to take their chances and record our (mature) lads the first defeat of the season. Top scorer, Matt McCarthy, was unsurprisingly our marksman.

This coming Saturday the Seniors welcome Bramford United to Salmet Close for a Senior League fixture while the Inter As travel to Felixstowe for the next round of the Suffolk FA Senior Reserves Cup against Eastern Counties Leaguers Felixstowe & Walton Utd Reserves. Last season our lads were successful in a similar cuptie against higher level opposition, Walsham le Willows Reserves, and, if Jamie King can field our strongest team, there could be every hope of similar success.
