Club Notes 15 January 2018

Increasingly this season, Achilles' Seniors are building a reputation of free scoring at both ends of the pitch. Saturday was no exception! Visitors, Ransomes Sports, despite their lowly position in the SIL Senior League, started "like a bomb" and were ahead within seconds without our lads touching the ball. Sadly for them that "early sparkle" soon disappeared and goals from veteran, Sean Bell, Danny Garrod (pen), Keiron Donovan and David Grimwood gave Achilles a commanding 4-1 advantage at the break.

The second half was largely dominated by us but former Achillian, Sanchez, gave our visitors a ray of hope but almost on time a typical mazy run by David finished with a fine shot bringing the proceedings to a 5-2 home win. Former Achilles' left back, Robbie Steele, was in attendance to see his son make his debut with his old Club in the second half and what a promising signing we have there! The win consolidated Achilles' second position in the League table but, clearly, in the battles to come our defence must be on the guard for "quick breaks".

Meanwhile, just down the road at Bourne Vale, the Reserves were doing battle with bottom of the table, Ipswich Ath Reserves. Our hosts, with no first team match, were slightly strengthened in attack but there was surely sufficient Achilles' talent to bring all three points back to Salmet Close? It was not to be with all three points going to Athletic via a 2-1 score line with Matt McCarthy our lone marksman. It has to be said that there were some eccentric decisions in this match with both teams suffering although, certainly, our management weren't exactly overjoyed when they returned to Salmet Close!

This Saturday the Seniors visit current League champs', Henley Athletic while the Reserves entertain Haughley Reserves in the League Cup.
