Club Notes 25 October 2018

A fine match at Salmet Close last Saturday with Achilles hosting a rejuvenated Haughley Utd in the 1st round of the Suffolk Senior Cup. Despite the head injuries to Connor Field and Lee Grimwood in the abandoned match at Henley the previous week, happily, both are recovering well to the extent that Connor was in the playing squad. The earliest exchanges were very much in favour of our visitors and had our most excellent standby 'keeper, Josh Hender, not been in top form Haughley's speedy forwards would have surely taken the lead for the visitors. As it was Gavin Van Oene gave us the lead xwith a superb 25 yard effort only, together with an equally "stroppy" opponent, to be dismmised from the proceedings half-way through the half. Close to the break our visitors scored twice to register a 2-1 lead.
A canny management decision saw the experienced, David Grimwood, and Liam Hillyard, enter the fray immediately after the break and. within minutes. Achilles were 3-2 up through excellent moves finished off by Darryn Van Oene and Connor Field.

At the 89th minute Haughley located all eleven players, that included their excellent 'keeper, up for a corner, the ball was headed clear, and Andy Crump surprised even himself with a quick sprint and shot from just over the half-way line to find an empty net to register a 4-2 home win and progress to the 2nd round which will also be a home tie on the 17th November against Eastern Counties Leaguers, Debenham LC FC.

Meanwhile, the Reserves were at the former Willis Faber complex (now Ipswich School's playing fields) and desipite losing at stages, 2-0 and 3-1, finally came away with a creditable 3-3 scoreline. Marksmen were "Carty" McCarthy, JP Taylor (first touch as a sub), and Keith Grimwood.

Away from the park, Management Committee member, Simon Revell, has announced arrangements for a Quiz Night on the (above) 17th November. Teams of six are invited (at £7 50 per person which includes a fish & chip supper) - contact anybody at the Pauls Sports & Social Club to obtain further information.or Dave Morgan on (01473 435867).

This Saturday both squads wiill join battle with Trimley Red Devils FC., with the Seniors at Salmet Close and the Reserves closer to the sea down there at Trimley!
