Club Notes 1st November 2018

Slightly belated notes covering Achilles' SIL Football League activity over the last seven days or so. First of all apologies to Trimley Red Devils who, as the result of the drop down list only including (the now extinct) BT Trimley. that heading was included in the match report. The report covered an excellent match, spnsored by Doug Wade, Insurance Consultant, who confessed that watching his former Club, Achilles, he derived far more satisfaction than sitting in his usual season ticket seat down at Portman Road.

There was an explosive start to proceedings when the Red Devils scored directly from the kick off. however, by half-time, Achilles were ahead through two efforts from Andy Crump and Connor Field. As the second half proceeded Achilles gradually built an initiative which, by the final whistle, had produced another four goals and, of course, a 6-1 score line. The further marksmen were Lee McGlone and substitute, Ryan Wragg, who notched up a most meritorious hat trick, signalling that his extended recovery from a nasty knee injury is finally complete. Performing serenely all the way through was Achilles' "man of the match" Sean Hanley. The Red Devils, just promoted from the SIL 1st Division, looked an attractive footballing team but, perhaps, need just a bit more toughness for Senior football.

Meanwhile, down at Stennets Field, the Red Devils' Reserves were entertaining our own Reserves and an attractive match finished "all square" at 4-4. That's not to say that there was total satisfaction on the part of returners to Achilles' HQ in that, soon after half-time, the score was 4-1 in favour of Achilles. However, lapses in play and, perhaps, over-confidence allowed the youthful hosts pull the situation back to that score-line. Achilles' goals were registered by Lewis Aubrey, Carl (Scoop) McCarthy (2), and James Steel with the latter looking, perhaps, the most likely candidate for promotion to the Senior level.

Away from the park the passing of Pauls Sports & Social Club's steward, David Jacobs, was marked by a large gathering at both the ceremony and the later Wake at the Club. Sadly, next week, a similar approach will be follwed for the passing of former Achilles' player, John Fulker, who left us suddenly, and prematurely, a few weeks ago.

A further reminder that the Achilles' Quiz Night will be held in the Pauls Club on Saturday 17th November with the first "query" being delivered at 7 30 pm. Teams of six are invited at £7 50 per person (to include a full fish and chips supper).
