Club Notes November 20th 2018

An excellent week-end for both squads with the Seniors beating Eastern Counties Leaguers, Debenham LC FC 3-2 in the Suffolk Senior Cup, before a large crowd at Salmet Close, while the Reserves arrived back in the clubhouse happy with their 5-0 victory over Henley Reserves.

The Seniors' match was full of incident with Achilles' going ahead halfway through the first half via a well- despatched penalty lby Andy Crump. Connor Field and Lee Grimwood could have made the lead even greater but the next incident of consequence for Achilles was the unfortunate dismissal of Lee McGlone for a genuine accidental "elbow" and it was our visitors who equalised just before the break from a hotly contested situation for offside.

The second half had hardly started when a real "ding dong" in Debenham's penalty area finshed with Connor slamming the ball home to restore that narrow lead for the ten men. Subsequent play was "cut and thrust" to say the least with our visitors seeking to take advantage of their numerical advantage. However, a slick and positive breakaway saw Connor registering his second, and Achilles' third, with a fine finish. Amost immediately Debenham reduced the lead to a single goal and then suffered the ignominy of a double "sending off" leaving our (10 men) lads to play out the few minutes left and progress to the next round.

Meanwhile, that Reserves' "triumph" at Henley raises them to 4th in the SIL "A" Division and with every chance of climbing even higher. Marksmen were JP Taylor (2), Matt McCarthy, Lewis Aubrey, and Ben Taylor. Nice to see Lee Capocci and Jamie Moran in the squad list giving justice to the award of loyalty to a number of the "older" Achillians.

In the evening Simon Revell's Quiz Night was a sell-out, with his style of presentation the hit of the evening. Joking apart, the event raised a goodly sum for Achilles' coffers. In addition to Simon, many thanks to Tina Taylor for the wholesome food during the natural break. While on social matters, chairman, Dave Morgan, will be circulating the usual Xmas Draw tiickets with his Xmas letter - another well-appreciated effort to raise income for the Club.

This coming Saturday back to the SIL Senior Division with the Seniors welcoming East Bergholt FC to Salmet Close while the Reserves have a re-allocated fixture at 'Bergholt (we think!).
