Club Notes 25/12/18

The Seniors maintained their impressive run since Andy Coote and Trevor Childs took over the management of the squad, this time with a hard fought away win over fellow title aspirants, Crane Sports, and before a large band of travelling Achilles' supporters at Greshams.

Our hosts started well and only a superb save by Andy Crump kept them at bay. However, in no time at all, after a fine move, they went one up and immediate resilience was the order of Achilles' day. Gradually, our midfield took over and, despite some unorthodox heroics by the home 'keeper, goals from Ryan Wragg and Gavin Van Oene gave Achilles a slim 2-1 advantage at the break.

The second period continued with both teams "fighting" to obtain, or maintain, the advantage (dependent on who you supported), but with some 15 minutes left Achilles were gifted an unexpected penalty, converted in his no nonsense manner by Gavin, enabling the lads to see the game out for a creditable 3-1 win.

This win ensured that SIL Senior League "top guys", Henley, are well within Achilles' sights and, if the outstanding match advantages are used to our advantage, who knows........!
This coming Saturday the Seniors welcome promoted Claydon FC to Salmet Close while the Reserves, third placed in a competitive SIL "A" League, have a further blank Saturday before their season takes off again.

Away from the park a reminder to all players and members that the annual Xmas Draw, organised by President David Routh, will be held at 8 pm on Monday 7th January 2019 in the Pauls' clubhouse and counterfoils and prize donations should be in asap. Finally, secretary, Pat Morgan, thanks everyone who have sent their good wishes. Her return will be several weeks yet!
