Club Notes 21/1/19

A fruitful week-end for both Achilles' Saturday activists with the Seniors taking all three SIL Senior League points away with them from Stennets Field (the home of Trimley Red Devils), via a 2-1 scoreline, while the rampant Reserves sent fellow SIL "A" League opponents, Westerfield, packing on the "stinging" end of a 7-2 scoreline in the SIL Travel Cup.

By all accounts the narrow outcome could (should?) have been wider in Achilles' favour. As it was a two goal lead, both efforts notched by Ryan Wragg, was reduced with just a few minutes left by the plucky homesters but there was still little doubt that our squad's return to fighting form would be rewarded by the spoils! All in all a most satifactory outcome for manager, Andy Coote, and our vastly experienced coach, Trevor Childs!

Henley, our closest rivals to "top spot", were surprisingly beaten at Benhall but with Crane Sports and Coplestonians very much "in the mix" we must ensure that the benefit of two games in hand is not squandered.

Meanwhile, the always combatitive Westerfield Reserves side were our vistors to Salmet Close in the SIL Travel Cup competition. Recent matches between the two squads have usually been very close. However, this time, on a perfect sunny afternoon, managers, Chris Crick's and Leon Wyatt's well balanced squad were simply too good for our East Ipswich rivals and, despite some plucky work by our visitor's 'keepers, goals came at regular intervals to send our lads into the semi-final of the competition. Marksmen were, Ash Reilly (2), Matt McCarthy ((2), Keith Grimwood, Jamie Steel, and JP Taylor.

This approaching Saturday the Reserves are without a game but the Seniors welcome the rejuvenated Haughley squad to Salmet Close. Away from the action a further reminder that Achilles' president, David Routh, gave notice of his 90th birthday celebrations and all of us at the Club congratulate David and thank him for his wise counsel born of so many years serving.
