Club Notes 25th March 2019

Very much "mixed blessings" for the Club last week-end with the Seniors crashing at East Bergholt while the Reserves compIled almost a cricket score against their unfortunate conterparts from Wenhaston.

On a bright, if chilly, afternoon at "Bergholt" it was always the homesters who looked likely to take all three points. Actually, in terms of simple possession it was possible that Achilles had at least 70% of play but it was always our hosts who used their 30% to best effect and, aided by some uncharacteristic mistakes on the part of our midfield, they went into an early two goal lead. This was pulled back from the penalty spot by Connor Field and, suddenly, Achilles were in control and seeking an equaliser. Sadly, though, a midfield calamity gave our hosts a commanding 3-1 interval lead and, although another penalty, this time converted by Gavin Van Oene, gave the travelling support some help, the quick thrusts typifying 'Bergholt's play, gave them two more deserved goals to register an almost crushing 5-2 victory.

Without doubt this reverse is a blow to the efforts of manager Andy Coote and his management colleagues, Trevor Childs and Jamie King, still ongoing to retain the SIL Senior League trophy. However, with Crane Sports holding on well to top spot, in addition, there is still Henley to play in a real "six pointer" (this in addition to the Suffolk FA Senior Cup semi- against the same in-form opponents) and, without doubt, the trio will be working hard to re-capture the sparkle which has been such a feature of most of the season thus far.

Meanwhile, the Reserves welcomed the unfortunate, but so plucky, Wenhaston second string to Salmet Close. The outcome was a large, to say the least, addition to Chris Crick's/Leon Wyatt's squad's goal difference - a 15-0 win! Marksmen were Keith Grimwood, Matt McCarthy, Ben Taylor (all 3 each), Tommy Smith, JP Taylor (2 each), and Lewis Aubrey and Jamie Moran.

This coming Saturday the Seniors welcome Westerfield Utd to Salmet Close while the Reserves travel to Old Newton for respectively, SIL Senior and League "A" encounters. Finally, the latest 100 Club winners were Norman Goodchild and "KS".
