Club Notes 15th October 2019

Mixed blessings for the Club last Saturday with the Seniors entertaining close rivals, Henley, before an exceptionally large crowd, but sadly losing 4-1, while the Reserves fareing better at East Bergholt, winning 6-4 in an obviously high-scoring, fairly close, encounter.

Despite the intermittent rain the Seniors' match was a credit to the managements of both squads with, in the end, our visitors taking all three points away with them. The surprising thing was that, for the first 45 minites, Achilles were the better side and could (should?) have been one or two goals to the good and it was largely the brilliance of Jones in the Henley goal who kept proceedings level at the break.

The second half was a different "kettle of fish" and, assisted by some poor defending on the part of our defence, Henley rammed in four goals with just Connor Field's fine effort to give us hope at 3-1 but it wasn't to be and another, the result of some absent marking, gave our visitors all three points. This was the second home match in succession when an excellent first half was snuffed in the second to the obvious disappointment on and off the field!.

Meanwhile the Reserves at East Bergholt were demonstrating, once again, their goalscoring abilities and, if they can ensure that not too many go in at their end, an encouraging start to the season could well result in some "silverware". Marksmen, not in "goal notching order, were Matt McCarthy (2), Andy Coote, Lee Grimwood, Tommy Smith and James Steel.

This comming Saturday the Seniors are away at Leiston St Margaret's while the Reserves entertain Trimley Red Devils in a re-arranged League "A" encounter at Salmet Close.

A further reminder that after both matches all roads should lead back to Salmet Close and the Pauls Sports & Social Club for the Achilles' Club Quiz Night - all welcome at £5 admission fee and "thinking caps" on.
