Club Notes 12 May 2013

Since the last notes on the 20 April Achilles have secured runners-up position in the SIL Senior League via a hard fought 2-1 win over Melton St Audrys - some compensation for the semi-final dismissal by the same team and score (the other way round, of course) in the semi-final of the SIL Bob Coleman League Cup.

Meanwhile the Inter As are hoping to achieve a similar runners-up position if they can beat Henley's Inter As in the last game of the season scheduled for the 14 May. Success has already "blessed" Shaun Deller's squad when, on Woodbridge Town's ground last Wednesday, Leiston St Margarets' Inter Bs were beaten 2-0 in a pulsating final for the Gipping Press Cup. In its various sponsorship guises this is the sixth time Achilles have won this Trophy and, understandably, there was much tribulation when players, officials, and supporters returned to Pauls later that evening.

All in all, and particularly if the Inter As can clinch runners-up position, this has been a most successful and enjoyable season for everyone at Achilles and this was duly celebrated at the Presentation Evening at Pauls when former Seniors' manager, Alan Middle, and chairman, Dave Morgan, gave out the various trophies and former Achillian, Jimmy Nunn, entertained us all with his particular brand of pleasant music. Very well done to the managers and, of course, all the players.

A reminder to the players that there are just a few SCFA fines still owed to the Club and, of course, the AGM is arranged for 8 pm on Wednesday, 29 May with President Routh in the chair.

The only "blot" is the £100 fine the Club has had to pay for the failure to make the twice (or was it thrice?) postponed away game at Rock Barracks against the "champs", Ipswich VRs. Apart from the fact that it would have been a "nothing" game with our potential hosts already "champs" and Achilles already runners-up, after the hard fought Melton game, only six or seven players were available for the  game just two days later and then, of course, the Inter As had their Cup Final the very next night and, therefore, could not step up. That's only half the story but as Jimmy Greaves used to say -
"Funny old game, Saint".
