Club Notes 23 September 2013

For the third week running no game for Achilles' Inter As on Saturday although, to be fair, this was a scheduled gap in the fixture list rather than opposing Clubs calling off!
However, this meant that our total concentration could be directed to Salmet Close where league leaders and, of course, champions, Ipswich Valley Rangers, were the visitors. With the Seniors just behind in second place in the table this was obviously going to be a close encounter and so it turned out to be.
There was an earlier scare a few days before the match, with both senior and Inter A 'keepers (Ross Charters and Jason Bones) away on holiday, and so some frantic work on the part of manager, Lee Osborn, and the help of our colleagues at Crane Sports (many thanks, Steve Roper, to your boys!) ensured the return of Achilles' veteran, Paul Carter, between the "sticks, and he did everything and more asked of him.
No score at the break but Ipswich VRs went in front halfway through the second half via a goal many on the touchlines thought was offside. Never mind, on came sub' Dom' Arnold, ostensibly resting for this coming Saturday's Suffolk Senior Cup encounter with Long Melford. We were then treated to a cameo performance to beat any other with Dom' curling in successive free kicks (every bit as good as Baines' and Rooney's) and then crashing in a left foot volley to secure his brilliant hat trick and the Seniors' a 3-1 win to take them back to top spot. Mention, too, for Sean Bell and Brent Richards who were rocks in defence.
A reminder that the Senior Cup game on Saturday is here at Salmet Close with a 2 15pm ko while the Inter As are away against the Inter As of Westerfield.
Finally, the most recent 100 Club winners are No 29 - Glen Parker and No 42 - Ken Lambley.
